Mapping educational support for child-on-child abuse and sexual harassment

The document offers a list of local support, education and prevention programmes, tools and resources for schools and young people.
Reducing period/menstruation stigma
Department for Education (DfE) research has indicated that the UK still experiences many challenges regarding period poverty and stigma/taboos relating to periods.
In 2020, a local survey administered across Barnet secondary schools found that most of the respondents (63.5%) strongly agreed or agreed that talking about periods and period poverty could result in individuals feeling embarrassed. When the survey was repeated in 2022, it showed that young people felt that there was still a significant amount of stigma relating to periods and asking for products.
As a result of the findings, it was recommended more information and education should be provided to boys and girls to address period stigma.
The Barnet Council’s All About Periods campaign aims to support children and young people throughout the Borough by normalising periods through awareness raising and addressing period poverty and stigma.
As part of the campaign, a useful School Toolkit has been developed to assist with delivering high-quality period education and a period-friendly school environment in your setting.

The campaign team would like to say a special thanks to JCOSS school for their contribution to the All About Periods Campaign. The campaign team even had the pleasure of having two sixth form JCOSS students support decision-making and the All About Periods conference.
In 2021, JCOSS began working on tackling period poverty and stigma and creating a period-friendly school environment. Examples of their work include improving access to period products around the school, developing posters, delivering assemblies, and supplementing the PSHE curriculum with more information on periods. More information on the work they have completed can be found in the JCOSS focus on periods document (ODT 10KB). JCOSS has also kindly shared some of the resources below to give examples of the work that can be done:
